Charles University Prague, founded in year 1348 is one of the oldest universities in the world and is one of the premier institutes of Czech Republic. Its Faculty of Medicine was the first medical university in Central Europe. The university has nearly 50,000 students, which is roughly a sixth of all students in the Czech Republic, enrolled in more than 300 accredited degree programmes that offer over 630 different courses.

Czech Republic is one of the best countries to study medicine abroad. The First Faculty of Medicine is an essential and integral part of Charles University Prague right from its establishment by the King of Bohemia and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, Charles the Fourth in 1348. That is to say, the First Faculty of Medicine represents the oldest and largest functioning medical faculty in Czech Republic. In addition, the First Faculty of Medicine runs an impressive and holistic study medicine abroad program for skilled international students. The institute aims to be a dynamic component of the European medical education system and conducts leading-edge biomedical research within the broader frame of the European Research Area.

During more than 670 years of its existence, Charles University has undergone a number of changes. It is currently a publicly-funded university which comprises a total of seventeen faculties, of which three are theological, six are faculties of the humanities and social sciences, five are medical and three are dedicated to sciences.

Charles University strives to encourage students to think critically, guide them to make the most of their potential and provide them with a comprehensive university education so as to enable them to succeed in demanding professions. It offers a wide range of degree programmes taught in Czech, all of them free of charge. In addition, more than sixty degree programmes at the University are taught in foreign languages, predominantly in English, with more than half of these comprising doctoral programmes.
